Ernespie Farm Beekeeping

Ernespie Farm is a family-run dairy farm rooted in Castle Douglas, Dumfries and Galloway, since 1947. The beekeeping operation is led by Brian McMicken, who learned the craft from his mother and now tends to 16 hives with the same respect and care she instilled in him. Brian keeps a docile breed of bees that are easy to handle and well-suited to the surrounding countryside. The honey and honeycomb produced at Ernespie reflect Brian's skill and patience, and are sold in the farm's on-site gift shop. The honey is celebrated locally not only for its flavour but also for its potential natural relief from hayfever, thanks to the unique pollen gathered from the surrounding Galloway countryside. Brian is registered on the local council's beekeeper register and is called upon when local swarms are reported. He is also an advocate for good beekeeping practice, offering advice and support to those starting their own hives. Hives are visible near the farm's outdoor play area, and during school holidays, additional hives are featured as part of the Ernespie Farm Tour. The farm was honoured with the Agriscot Dairy Farm of the Year award in 2019.
